International
adoption in the Ukraine was enacted
in 1996 by approval of the new version of "Kodeks pro Shlud ta
Semiu Ukraini" (Law of Marriage and Family of the Ukraine. This
code explains in detail the process for international adoption.
Identification of the child takes place within the orphanages.
Taking into consideration all of the orphanages and waiting children,
the possibilities of placement are
many!

The Children waiting for adoption in
Ukraine are age a minimum of 12 months before they are off the
registry. When you arrive in country, you will meet with a social
worker at the SDA and give your criteria for the child you wish
to adopt (ex: male child under 2). The social worker will have
a large book that you will literally page through to help choose
a child. It is very common for there to be very few choices of
healthy young children, maybe 2-3 total. Families looking only
for healthy young girls will have even fewer choices. Of course
there will be multiple choices for older children, especially
boys and sibling groups. Once a match is made, your dossier will
be processed along with the approvals needed to go and visit the
child. In most cases travel by train will be necessary to get
to the city and orphanage where the child is located. Trains usually
leave in the late afternoon and depending on the city, the ride
can last up to 12 hours. Upon arrival in the adoptive city you
will be taken to the orphanage where you will meet the child you
have been matched with for the first time. If you accept the child,
the process can proceed immediately and paperwork will be filed
at the local court. If the child is not acceptable to you, you
will travel back to Kiev for another appointment with the SDA
adding several days to your trip.
Parents
usually travel 2-3 months after their dossier is submitted to
the SDA in Kiev.
The process of adoption usually
takes 9-10 months to complete! You will work closely with your
WPA Adoption Coordinator during your journey to build your forever
family. Our entire staff is composed of dedicated parents who
have adopted their own children, and they have compassion and
empathy for your needs throughout your process. We will help you
file your INS paperwork, compile the documents for your dossier,
prepare you for your travel abroad, and answer all of your questions
about the adoption process.
Once
the paperwork is complete,
it is then translated and submitted to SDA in Ukraine. After your
dossier has been submitted to the SDA, you will receive your invitation
for an appointment with the SDA in Kiev approximately 2 months
later. You will then travel to Kiev and be met by our representative
who will accompany you to the appointment with the SDA. Once the
selection has been made, our partner will arrange for your travel
and accompany you on the trip. In the adoptive city they will
arrange everything with the local court, file the correct paperwork
on the child and represent you before the judge. Your adoption
will be finalized within Ukraine and you will complete paperwork
for your child's visa through the US Embassy in Kiev. Our partners
will be there to help you each step of the way!
We
will be happy to help you in any way and answer any questions
you have. Please call us at 1-800-350-7338 or email us at WPAJim@aol.com.
We look forward to being
a part of your journey to adopt a Child!
